Cats R Us Latest TNR Success

We at Cats R Us talk about TNR all the time, but do you really know what that means? TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, and Return. It’s a labor intensive process that involves a lot of people, a lot of moving parts, and of course a lot of cats.

Cats R Us trapper extraordinaire and other volunteers humanely trapped 38 cats and 6 kittens this week, catching most of them last Sunday for a grand total of 44 cats from a colony of approximately 48 cats located behind an area hotel.

This colony of cats didn’t use to be so big. When their caretaker, an employee in the hotel began caring for them 10 years ago, it was just a couple cats, but over the years those few cats became a lot of cats. And it happens everywhere. Estimates put the total of homeless cats at over 70 million nationwide.

These homeless community cats do not have it easy. Years of survival outside shortens their lives (by up to half compared to indoor cats) but by humanely spaying and neutering them we can increase their life expectancy, reduce their chance of disease through vaccination, and reduce the number of homeless cats being produced.

In this case, these 44 cats have all been spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped for future identification. Thirty-six were re-released today. Two were held back for further medical treatment and the kittens have all been placed in foster homes.

We believe that these cats all originated in a nearby neighborhood. Either indoor-outdoor pets were allowed to roam without being spayed or neutered or worse they were simply abandoned. Cats R Us reaches out to people in neighborhoods like these offering low-cost spay/neuter services to low-income families and educating about the importance of spay/neuter and the problem of pet overpopulation.

This enormous undertaking was such as success due to grant money that Cats R Us receives as well as through generously discounted veterinary services at Spay Spa & Neuter Nook. The cats’ caretakers have also generously contributed.
